No need for another language! A Finn, Eero Kuparinen published a dissertation in 1991: ”An african alternative; nordic migration to South Africa 1815-1914”. One chapter is on the migration during the boer war, and the recruiting the british directed specifically to merchant sailors (and unemployed) to join up.
