A possibility for sure Chris.
I am in the process of checking attestation papers where possible with a Wolverhampton connection. 1879 to 1890.

Dave.
Ps I was wondering if our forum newspaper archive experts could have a look for William / Bill Price in the local papers around the Wolverhampton / West Midlands area?

Dave - the FMP newspaper search facility allegedly gives access to the Wolverhampton Express & Star at time of the ABW but closer examination shows the years 1900 & 1902 are missing. Searching 1899 & 1901 for "William Price" & "Bill Price" gives zero hits. Searching for "W Price" gives about 8 hits of which half are spurious and the remaining 4 are equally divided between the Rev W W Price and a Bilston Councillor, Mr W E Price.

Firstly can I thank everyone for your help,

My husband has just been looking at my watch and on closer inspection we can see that the coin is a Pond South African Republic dated 1894. Coin looks brand new.

Hello, me again. I am assuming there have been no references found to William Price?

Not yet Moonsprite, I found over 70 William Prices relating to army service before the 2nd Boer War. (1879 to 1890). There were a couple of West Midlands contenders, but nothing matched your ancestor at present.
