Hello, and thanks for allowing me to join my great Uncle William Copper name is on the memorial in Sheffield I have just seen it very proud of seeing his name on it I have William's Boer War medal and his saber which has been kept in the family for over a 100 years now and shall remain so he was only 20 when he was killed and sadly missed by his mother and father. William was in the Yorks and Lancs Regt and I have also got an oil painting of him in uniform

Can you give us the number, rank and naming on the rim of the medals and perhaps post photos of them, along with the sword and portrait?

Would love to see them.

Regards

Rory

Welcome to the forum, Greengirl.

Is that the monument by the university building in Sheffield?

It is great that your family has retained his medals and sword.

Best wishes
David

Hello Greengirl-64
Welcome to the forum, see attached link.
www.findagrave.com/memorial/230989092/w-cooper

Could this be your Great Uncle William?
If so, he was a Private 5964 1st Battalion York and Lancs regiment.
His personal belongings record entry has him dying on the 23rd of March 1902. Newcastle, Natal from disease.
A miner by trade, he lived at Swinton Yorkshire. He left his gratuites to his Father Henry.
His medal roll records a QSA with 2 clasps , Cape Colony and Orange Free State.

Dave.....
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave
