Your G Grandfather was living at Byker in Newcastle reference the 1901 census. He was living with a family called Smith. Also, there was a boarder living there . She was called Sarah Snaith. I believe she later became John Henry's wife. It is Snaith on his attestation papers not Smith. Apologies for my error.

Dave.......
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.
Best regards,
Dave

Hi Dave. Thank you so much for the warm welcome and the information. I must have overlooked the record with the Morton transcription error. Thanks for finding it for me. I'm so glad I joined this forum. Everyone has been so helpful.

Yes, John Henry Norton did stay with his cousin, Ainsley Smith, in 1901 where he must have met my 2x great grandmother, Sarah Snaith (who was a boarder/servant?). They married in August the same year and my great grandmother, May Norton, was born 9 months later in May 1902. Must have been a whirlwind romance. ; )

I am just trying to transcribe a Boer War memorial for the IWM WMR.

It is various referred to as Manchester or Lancashire Imperial Yeomanry.

The image is not online yet, can take a few days (or longer!) but will be #18576 when it does.

There is a Private H. NOTON - definitely no "R" in it and NOTON does seem to be a valid surname because five on the CWGC website.

Using the name search facility on this site comes up with 5 soldiers ho served in the ABW with the surname Noton.

The most likely is 1876 Harold Noton of the 21st (Cheshire) Company of the Imperial Yeomanry. His attestation papers and service record can be found on Ancestry & Find My Past. He was born in Manchester. After 7 months with the IY he seems to have been discharged in SA. Based on a transcription record on FMP, he appears to then have joined the Cape Police and survived the ABW.

The memorial is rather confusing!

The left hand side has
NAMES OF OFFICERS & MEN WHO JOINED THE IMPERIAL YEOMANRY.
Then columns for RANK, NAME, RANK IN Y (??), REMARKS

The right hand side ad NAMES OF MEN WHO FORMED 4TH SECTN OF VOLUNTEERS COY. MANCHESTER REGT.
That has RANK, NAME, RANK-ARMY, REMARKS

The left hand side has four names headed by 'BEARERS'

Then more names at the bottom for a couple of Sharpshooters and some names that went out in Feby 1901.
