The Special Service Company prior to embarking for the seat of war. Over 600 men volunteered to serve with the R. Mon.RE. The final number selected was 106, therefore making a QSA to this band of engineers highly desirable.


The unit were mostly involved with repair work following track and infrastructure destruction of the Permanent Way by the Boers. Lieutenant Colonel Henry Edzell Morgan Lindsey was the officer commanding (much more about him later!).

A very pleasant, but too short a visit on this day. Definitely get back there again.

But you will have to wait until Easter 2025 before the museum is open to the public again.

What a superb set of Medals to major James Guy and very appropriately at home in Monmouth Castle. Has there been a previous post giving details of his family and service life?

We have seen one James Guy on the site but not this one.

This James served in A Pontoon troop for his QSA (clasps CC, Tr, TH, RoL and LN) and was A Troop, Bridging Battalion for his KSA, Both as 382 Corporal.

He was born in 1879 in Swansea, Glamorgan, Having worked as a collier, he joined aged 18 years and 8 months on 5 January 1897. He was MID 1 January 1916 and MC LG 14 January 1916.
