I joined the forum as I am really interested to learn more about my Great Grandfather who took part in the Boer War.

Growing up I was always amazed by the photographs that he took of the conflict, a collection of around sixty photos in all.

Using the Name Search function on the website, I was not able to find anything about his, which surprised me.

Can anyone advise me on how to find out more?

Thank you

Hello Hunter7
Welcome to the forum.
Is it possible you can provide any details on your Great Grandfather? A name, date of birth and where he resided may help the forum to help you find out more about your relative.

Regards

This is all I know about the man.

William Hunter
Farrier Quartermaster Sergeant major
6th Dragoon Guards the Carabineers
Born in Glasgow 1863, I think he died in York in 1943
Retired from the army in 1906 in India

That’s everything I know about him apart from the photos from the album he put together

Your Great Grandfather William attested in July 1885. Regimental number 2323.
He was in South Africa for 2 years and 9 months.
He was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal with 6 clasps.
Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Belfast and the Relief of Kimberley.
He was also awarded the Kings South Africa medal with 1901 and 1902 clasps.
If you search this site for the 6th Dragoon Guards you will find a brief history of their time in the conflict.

Your Great Grandfather is recorded.

Link to your Great Grandfathers regiment.

Your Great Grandfathers service. After his time in S A. He left Natal for 7 years in India.
His recorded character was exemplary.

PS. The 1911 census has your Great Grandfather living in York with his family and working as a porter for the G P O.

Example of the medals and clasps your Great Grandfather William was awarded and entitled to during his time in South Africa

Perhaps sometime in the future you could upload some of the photographs William had in his photo album? I am sure the ABW forum would be very happy to see them.
