Dear David,
Many thanks for these. I do have the Information of Death for Frederick but it is really good to have the other two attestation documents. Thanks for your time and efforts. I really appreciate it.

Best wishes,
Liz

Hello David,
I'm sure I replied to your message to thank you for all these documents but I can't find it. So thank you for giving your time to locate them. They are another piece in the jigsaw of my family history which I am in the process of writing up for the younger generation.

Can I just ask another question? I understand that the Queen's South Africa Medal was given to many people. Was it a standard medal given to anyone who was involved in the war or was it given for notable conduct or contributions to the war. I have another ancestor who received one for his work with armoured trains.

Many thanks,
Liz

Liz,

You did thank me earlier in the week and that was much appreciated.

The Queen's and King's South Africa Medals were issued to most of the people who served in South Africa between 1899 and 1902 on the 'British' side. Some 450,000 medals were issued. Where someone performed more noteworthy services they could receive a range of rewards/acknowledgements from a mention in a report (despatches) to a separate medal for their service. The majority of acts of gallantry went unrewarded and unacknowledged and many of the additional awards were given for service rather than gallantry.

Best wishes
David

Hi David,

Thanks very much. I thought that, given all three of them got a medal it was fairly common. Still, it is a medal and something else to add to the family history.

I wondered if there are any records which would answer the question as to why he was discharged as medically unfit in one of his entries. I can't find it now on the website but there were three entries for his name and this appeared in one of them when he was a trooper. He then came back as a sergeant.

If there is any information about that I would be interested.

Thanks for all your help so far.

Best wishes,
Liz
