Hi Shona,

good luck-I'm from Alex and run in the area weekly so if you need photos or anything let me know!

Im very interested in butlers boer war exploits as well so please let me know if you find anything.
1900 was the gold dredging boom around here then so not too many went to war.

Certainly will Glenn (photos and Butler's Boer War exploits). Alex was lovely place when I was there....but a bit cold!

Think John may have been either a bit of a black sheep or an adventurer. His whole family was Catholic, but he states on his attestation papers he was of Church of England and went working elsewhere, away from the farm before going to war.

Cheers

Dear sbak
Maybe this is too long ago, but here are a photo and memorial.

Thank you for your email. The photo is definitely my Uncle, but the headstone is not him, unless he was under another name. I have however found a headstone in SA that is more likely to be him.
I haven't got any further about why both units are mentioned in his papers, or why he was field court martialled. Only time, if ever, will tell.
Thanks everyone!

Hi Glenn,
Sorry, didn't see your reply. John's father, also John, did mine, but then went into farming, and did well. But he sold the farm to an orchard business, Didn't go well, due to frosts.
Farm is still there. www.heritage.org.nz/the-list/details/3240
Cheers,
Shona
