My Grandfathers Army Book lists the following info:
Regiment: Army Services Corp
Home address: 2 nd Reg SAMR Pmburg
Occupation before war; R QMS 2 SAMR
Promotion:30/9/17 2/Lt
30/3/19 Lt
Demob 24/12/19
Service: SAMR GSW Africa 4/8/14-4/11/16
Army Service Corp 17/10/17-9/4/18 (wounded)

His commanding officer in France wrote a commendation which is faded. Can make out that he was put in charge of No 4 Co 40th unreadable and then wounded by major mining? BEF stands out in places.

I don't have anymore info and unfortunately my father has Alzheimers and can't help. 88, living in SA and one of the few SAAF WW2 Spitfire pilots still alive.

Thank you for the extra information about your grandfather. Many South African soldiers volunteered to serve elsewhere after the GSWA campaign, so their medals are often named to two or three units.

I have a few Natal Police/SAMR medal groups and it was certainly worthwhile getting copies of their SAMR files from Pretoria. I used a researcher, so it costs a fair amount, probably more now than it did several years ago. The person I used was Audrey Portman ([email protected]).

PS My wife had an uncle who also flew Spitfires. He was passionate about that aeroplane.
