David,
I think you meant to reply to Clive, instead. I'm brand new to the list and entered my inquiry/intro here because I saw "Norfolk". Probably need to repost outside this thread.
thanks

Hi David,
Thanks for the info. We had found the CWG reference but we don't have Ancestry so it was good of you to check that out for us.

I can see no alternative to making a trip to Kew and tackling their catalogue system. It'll be a new experience.

Thanks again
Clive

Good morning,

I am new to this site having reached here from the Great War Forum where I post mainly on topics to do with county Norfolk. I am trying currently to link faces with names on 1901 and 1914 images. The image of the Lynn memorial is a good start for me. Thank you.

Is there some kind person near Gt Yarmouth, Norfolk who would be willing to visit the Town Hall and confirm the existence of a Boer War memorial for me? Most of all though, I would love a general image and a legible close up or a transcription of any names, units and dates.

The IWM ( www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/19918 ) says it is located in the Town Hall and that it is a marble tablet in a wooden surround.

Regards,

Rob.

The fine people at Yarmouth Town Hall have just now sent me a 6 MB image of the memorial. If you would like a (resized?) copy please let me know. Rob.

Fredrick William Britton, an 18 year old labourer from Laurence, joined the Militia, the 3rd Norfolk's on the 24th of October 1898, he was embodied with his regiment of actual service in South Africa, on the 25th of January 1900, he received his first good conduct pay on the 25th of January 1902, he was disembodied with his regiment on the 11th of April 1902 and subsequently joined the Army on the 4th of May 1903, he gave his mother, Ellen, as his next of kin and his address as Tilney Street, Laurence, Kings Lynn.

Thanks for that. This is the right F.W. Britton and many thanks for the photo. We keep promising ourselves a visit to the memorial at Arras. We originally thought we were on the wrong line when we saw that he was serving in the Border Regiment until we found his WW1 record online and found he'd initially enlisted in the Norfolk Regiment before being transferred.

I don't think there's going to be any option but to try to find his Boer War service records at the National Archives but I must admit to feeling daunted by having to negotiate their catalogue.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Clive
