Hi Donald

I append 4 scans dealing with McFarlane's demise : you may be able to access the publication at one of your libraries. It is a paperback booklet, quarto in size, and the red, white, blue and black cover is titled : 1906 * Christmas Number * 2/- * Transvaal Leader.

It is a scarce item : I have noted that a copy was listed by Africana Book Collectors (Pietermaritzburg) in their January 1993 Catalogue at R1450-!!!
Fortunately I acquired my copy in the early 1980's for well below that figure.

If you let me have your e-mail address, I can send you the 4 scans at larger than the 800 limit.

Henk

Hello Don,
I would go with Henk's booklet regarding the circumstances of McFarlane's death as KIA and not Died of Wounds, it would not be the first time that info in a Roberts publication is actually incorrect! :(
Major Edwards is shown in WO100/292 page 66 as a "Local Major" serving with De Lisles 5th and 6th South Australian Imperial Bushmen Corps and on page 49 with the 5th South Australian Imperial Bushmen with service from the 4th of April 1900 to the 8th of May 1901 and the 9th of May 1901 to the 31st of May 1902
Regards Frank

Thanks for your welcome and information.

Yhe R egister references are very helpfuland I shall obtain hard copy for my files.

I have found a good source of photos and info in the bound volumes of the photographic pages of the Chronicle

This is where I got my first lead on McFarlane. This is the spelling of his name I havefooud so far but will try both spellings in future.

For interest I am also looking at Major V H Edwards, a South Australian who among other exploits was Officer in Charge of the outer defences of O'okiep yet did not get the medal in bronze or especially in silver to which I feel he was entitled
