Hi Milo,

Ross's Machine Gun Battery was indeed a volunteer English unit raised and paid for by Sir Charles Ross. It was attached to Loch's Horse, another volunteer unit, raised in February 1900 by Lord Loch. Both units officially became a part of the South African Mounted Irregular Forces.

Fyi, Kersey was a King's Messenger during the First World War.

Regards,

Justin

Gentlemen,
Ross's Battery was originally part of Loch's Horse and was known as the "Colt Battery Loch's Horse" it was raised in London on the 16th of May 1900, the original enlistment period was for 12 months, but, it was disbanded in Capetown in September of that year, Loch's Horse having been raised, also in London, exactly two months earlier.
It was a "C Class" unit within the SAMIF, ie Directly under the AAG Colonial Forces AHQ Pretoria.

Hi Mike, I wanted to make sure you knew how thankful I was to get all your input. I went on vacation and have only just got up and going again . My character "Kersey" I believe had the money to not need to work and the physical stature to feel comfortable under duress (having just come from two winters in the yukon) - but I DO think that he was anxious to attach a rank to his name, because he associated mainly with men of very elevated situation, Barons, Dukes, Marquis, or with Admiralty seniors - Admirals, Colonels and Majors - I think he wanted a title to use with his name - the only way he could get it without being born into it.

But again great thanks. Milo
