If you haven’t researched him yet I thought you might like to see his entries on the QSA & KSA lists.
To quote some serial numbers from armyservicenumbers.blogspot.co.uk/2009/0...-2nd-battalions.html for (regular) Border Regiment soldiers who may have been serving in The Boer War period:

“186 joined on 4th July 1882
447 joined on 1st September 1883
637 joined on 14th May 1884
982 joined on 30th January 1885
1569 joined on 25th January 1886
1999 joined on 15th January 1887
2341 joined on 13th January 1888
2696 joined on 7th February 1889
2947 joined on 8th January 1890
3064 joined on 24th January 1891
3448 joined on 11th April 1892
3897 joined on 3rd February 1893
4216 joined on 15th January 1894
4768 joined on 12th August 1895
5025 joined on 31st March 1896
5451 joined on 27th July 1897
5934 joined on 1st June 1898
6025 joined on 8th March 1899
6317 joined on 25th October 1900
6432 joined on 7th February 1901
6638 joined on 10th January 1902"

So it would appear Gale joined about April 1896 ?

For accounts of one of Gale’s contemporaries, you may like to read some postings on The Border Regiment forum by one of our members “CockneyTone” about his grandfather Charles Stenning Wollaston who enlisted into the 1st Battalion Border Regiment as Private 5548 in London on 27th September 1897
(I’m pretty sure he will be a member of this forum too, so if you’re reading this Scottie, I hope you don’t mind me putting in this plug for the postings about your grandfather!, Paul )

Hi Coldstream,
I don't think I can really add anything to the comprehensive research you've already done.
You might like to a have a look at the links to a 1st battalion soldier that I've put on my reply to QSAMike, as they relate to the experiences of one of your man's contemporaries, Cheers Paul.

Hello Coldstream,
In case you didn't find it during your research, here's Malhanch's entry on the QSA roll.
He does not appear on the KSA roll for The Border Regiment, but I guess he probably did not qualify as you said he spent a period at home after being wounded at Spion Kop.

What a great serial no. - 4000 ,he wouldn't forget that one !

Cheers Paul.
