Hello everyone,
I have been researching my family for quite a number of years and have had a family photo passed down from my father via his mother. It is a photo of Prince Alfred's Own Cape Artillery Regiment during the 2nd Boer War, complete with gun and a donkey lying down with it's head on someone's knee. Unfortunately no insignia is visible. I have tried in the past to try and trace which relative in my family tree actually was in that regiment. The only person that is currently a possibility is R Coulson who is on the medal roll. It has been a few years since I got this information and I have been unsuccessful in tracing him due to the limited information to hand, the lack of a first name and how he came to be in that regiment. I really need to start again to see if anyone else in the regiment has a surname in my family tree. As Coulson may just be a coincidence, if anyone can shed some light on where I can start or if anyone has a list of who was in the regiment. I would be eternally grateful.
Thank you in advance for any help
Janet

Good evening and welcome to this forum,
You know I only looked at this corps only the other week for another forum member, a very small unit with a number of interesting people, so my first question would be how do you know that the photo is actually of this unit, my second question would be what are the names of your family in that period?
Regards Frank

Hello Frank,

Thankyou for your prompt reply.

I sent the photo to a forum person, maybe not this one. The uniforms and the actual gun gave apparently narrowed it down to the regiment I mentioned. I am certainly open to any other suggestions. I have a few family surnames that it could be as my grandmother told my father is was his uncle or gt uncle and only mentioned a first name which I cannot remember but I thought it was Robert. My grandmothers maiden name is Vernon and her mothers maiden name is Coulson, my fathers surname is Whyman but of course it could be a sisters husbands brother or something so I will have to look them all up. I need a list of who was in the regiment to be able to have a good look through them. I was hoping to attach a copy of the photo but it must be on my other computer.
