I am trying to find some info on my grandfather Cyril Egerton Webb who we understand was in the 7th Dragoon Guards.

From the attached photo can anyone say if this is the correct regiment. I have been unable to find any records for him for the Boer War, we understand he was at Ladysmith.

This is my first posting so hope I have done things right.

Many thanks

Wendy

Hello and welcome,
A really superb photo, looking at the 7th Dragoon Guards medal roll, whilst there are a number of Webb's who saw service in the war, none have those particular initials, looking at the photo, he is wearing the foreign Service Helmet, complete with spike and chin scales, this complicates matters.
I am tempted to say a Lancer regt, however, that would be far too obvious, the British cavalry of the day were trained in the use of the lance.
Anything else you can tell us, birth year, location etc?
Kind regards Frank

Thank you taking the time to look at pic and help me.

Cyril was born 1883 and claimed he was underage when he went to off to the Boer War.

I got the info of his regiment from his brothers war record which I have found, he gives Cyril as one of his next of kin and says he was in 7th Dragoon Guards. However another piece of info that has just been given me was that Cyril was in South Africa in 1917 and this could relate to WW1 and not the Boer War.

Sorry if I am complicating things somewhat.

In 1916 Cyril was applying to a Tribunal in St Albans for deferment and it stated he had been a regular for 12 years and 8 months and in the reserves for 4 years. Don't know if that helps at all.

I have a medal card for him which ways he was awarded the SWB and that's all.

Kind regards

Wendy

Hi Wendy,
There was only the one matching index card, with that exact name, but, this man is serving in the Army Service Corps and not the Cavalry.
The reason why I think the photo is earlier and not later is because the man in the picture is not wearing the 1908 pattern sword.
I can't see any service papers for this name on line either.

Hi Wendy,
Not all papers were digitised, moreover, the on line search engines are often a pain to use, I will have another look, if any have survived they would answer your questions.
