The names of most of the provinces have changed. The former Transvaal is now divided into Mpumalanga, Limpopo, North West and Gauteng

Adrian:
I agree with your analysis- most likely my man was from east Transvaal, since all three commandos originate from that area. Too bad there does not seem to exist the Boer nominal roll I was wondering about.
Thanks also for the SA geography primer. Gives me a better idea of "the lay of the land"- will have to see about getting a map that I can refer to in the future.
Cheers,
John S

Mike:
The data base is a really great tool for researching Boer participants.
I found the information held to be most interesting- there is one listing for a Frederick Johannes Combrink as a POW, and he was with the Lydenburg commando- probably one of the three men mentioned at the start of my thread.
Wondering- the spellings of Frederick VS Frederik or Fredrik- would a Boer participant have his name spelled FREDERICK, or FREDERIK or FREDRIK, and might the spellings, even though different, refer to the same man?
Cheers,
John S

John,

If I might butt in here.

I spent many years in the South African Air Force during the 70's and 80's and worked with a great deal of good men from an Afrikaans background. I can tell you that some of the chaps wrote their names as they pronounced it so I would say that there is no doubt that this is the case here.
