I have just recently discovered this excellent site and find it of great interest. My one grandfather served with the Frankfort / Vrede Commando at the Siege of Ladysmith and the general Natal area as a medic. His father was British born and was a member of the Edenburgh Town Guard.
Hope to contribute to the website and am also looking for info on both of these units if anybody can help.

Regards

Dudley

Hello and welcome to this forum,
I can't really help you with the grandfather and Commando side of things, I expect Adrian can, but, his father, well maybe.
Can you tell us their names and anything else which you feel is of the period?
There is a medal roll for the Edenburg Town Guard in WO100/281, at Kew, the Cape Colony clasps have been crossed out, as one can expect.
I am wondering if the attestation papers for this particular Town Guard have survived, I am confident that if so, they are not here in Great Britain, I do not recall ever seeing any to a member of this Town Guard in WO126 at the TNA Kew, but, I could be wrong.
Again welcome, kind regards Frank

Welcome Dudley,

I hope you will be able to find some answers to your questions here.

There are some nominal rolls for Town Guard in WO126/145-163 but Edenburg TG is sadly not one of them.

Best wishes
David

Hi Dudley

Welcome to this forum. I hope that your Boer grandfather left some record of his service in Natal. We do not get enough of that perspective of the war.

Hello Duduley,

As Frank mentions there is a roll for the award of the QSA medal to members of the Edenburg TG. I have these roll pages to hand and will have a look for you if you can supply us with a name.

The application forms for the award of the ABO medal (a medal awarded to the Boer men) if they applied for it have survived and the following chap can get you copies.

[email protected]

These forms show home address and battles participated in etc.

Welcome to the ABW Forum.
