I have known of several over the years and I have one in my collection. It was awarded to H C Lloyd, who went on to serve in the Natal Carbineers during the 1906 Rebellion.

Regards
Brett

PS For Natal veterans of the Boer War it is always worth checking the Natal Rebellion rolls, since many men served in both conflicts. Broken groups with one or other medal missing seem to be as common as those that have both medals.

Brett,

Reading your post has prompted a question - was the Ladysmith Town Guard raised prior to the outbreak of war or in response to it?

Best wishes,

Justin

Hello Jim,
It is not the sort of medal that got "scrapped" so I would think many have survived, but, they are not common, it is really the sort of medal that you should just buy at the point that you actually see one.
Kind regards Frank

Many thanks for the reply and photo. I often wonder how many of these medals still exist.

Cheers,

Jim

I had not considered this point until now. My assumption has been that the military establishment in late Victorian Natal was as follows:

Natal Police, the Colony's paramilitary first line of defence.
Imperial regiment garrisoned at Fort Napier to be mobilised in defence of British interests (i.e. not matters such as the 1906 Rebellion).
Volunteer (i.e. 'Territorial') regiments with HQ's in main towns (e.g. Natal Carbineers, Natal Royal Rifles etc), to be mobilised in defence of the Colony.
Town Guards in the larger country towns to be mobilised in defence of the town.
Rifle Associations in rural areas to be mobilised in defence of the district.

While the histories of the Natal Mounted Police/Natal Police, Fort Napier garrisons, and Volunteer Regiments are well documented and it is certain that they were in existence long before 1899, I do not know when the Town Guards and Rifle Associations were established, but I guess that they too were in place well before the Boer War.
