Hi,
Really glad I have found this site. I am carrying on from my late mother in respect to his person. We have not found out a great deal about this mounted unit, but I am hoping this will shed some new light on this chapter.

Hi Coldstream,

I have had a look at the books you have linked to, but they look like the dead scrolls, is this what they are, because by the looks of things the one for J. Cowan does not look that way, unfortunately I can't really make out what the writing in red is saying, do you have any idea by chance ?. Also do you know what the column headings are as well. Sorry to be a pain this might well be the lead or leads I'm looking for.

Regards
Simon

Hello Simon,
Cowan, is shown as Cowen in both WO100 and WO127, any surviving attestation and perhaps a discharge paper too will be found in WO126/6-14 at the National Archives Kew London, he was serving in the Komgha Mounted Rifles before joining the 1st Brabants Horse, a class C corps within the SAMIF, and is shown on page 24 of WO100/237 as being entitled to a QSA and clasp for the Cape Colony, this was issued on the 24th of March 1905, almost certainly to the officer commanding the colonial discharge depot, returned on the 17th of February 1907 and appears to have been reissued to him on the 1st of January 1912 at a North London address, I need to look again at this latter.
He appears to have returned to the Komgha MR after his discharge from 1st Brabants Horse.

Welcome to this forum and bon chance with this man, General Brabant himself liked to recruit his own men and this unit was considered by many and indeed still is by some, including me, to be one of the best units raised for this war!
Kind regards Frank

Simon,
That address appears to be 25? Parkston? Rd Higbury (Highbury) New Park London N, so I think would now be part of N5, the area was damaged in 1940-41.
