Hello Meurig,
Yes they will have memorials, you are taking me back some twenty years or so when I was in my teens and used to spend a lot of my spare time at Kew, I have really not bothered to look at this since, it all rather depended on money and connections!

A most memorable gentleman would be Captain Edward Murray of the Cameron's, though, he was serving as adjutant of the Lovats Scouts when he was killed.

Kind regards Frank

Thanks Frank - just found a reference to him in the SAMHS journal article by Steve Watt - he was re-interred at the family seat of Scone Palace in Scotland. His gravestone in South Africa was relocated to Aliwal North, and I guess is still there today - just confuse everybody!

Need to read through In Memoriam to find more of these chaps.

Thanks Lynne.

92630 William Earnest Cork - has service papers are at FindmyPast - he was born in Clonmel in 1878.

There are no papers for a William Herbert Cork on FmP or Ancestry.

I am thinking that WE Cork is not your man?

Definitely not......which is the best place to look. I know that in 1889 he had a son (my fathers father) and on the birth certificate the occupation of the father was staff sergeant kings royal rifles. I am at a loss if there is no mention of him on ancestry or FmyP. Also, is it possible for a staff sergeant to later be a lieutenant?

Thank you so much for your time and patience.

Hello Lynne

The lack of papers, while a blow to researchers, doesn't prove he wasn't in the Army - the birth certificate does prove he was.

A staff sergeant could reach the rank of Honorary Lieutenant & Quartermaster - these ranks are listed in the Army List - an annual list of army officers and senior NCOs.
