Hi There,

I just joined this forum. The reaon being that I'm researching my Family history and found some info that a lot of my ancestors spend some time in British concentration camps during 1901 and 1902. I also found a record of Hendrik Pertus jacobus Baasden that was captuered by the british on 18/02/1901 and shipped to Indie to a place called Hawarden.I can not find info that says if he died there or returned to South Africa.

Where can I find more info without having to pay for it? I really do not want to pay for information if I do not have to, but will if all other resources are exausted.

Great forum

Hi there,

I found this entry which is in the Free State Archive. It pertains to who I believe, is the mans wife who died in 1937. This might tell you more if you get the file copied. There do not seem to be any further entries on the data base that are for your chap.

Regards
Adrian

There is an entry in the ABO medal roll which could possible be him ????

This entry is Baasdon (not Baasden) Petrus Jacoubus from the Heildelberg Commando !!!!

Thank you for the reply. I will look at the record mentioned.

I do have a reference from Brittish Concentration Camps Database for a Sophia Wilhelmina Baasden who was in a camp outside Bloemfontein and then transfered to Winburg between 12/05/1901 and 22/07/1902. She was 41 years old at the time and Hendrik Petrus Jacobus was 27 at the time of his capture. Unless she was a lot alder than him, Im not convinced that he was her husband. It mentions that her husband was a POW and was transfered to India. I found the record of Petrus Jacobus and entertained the possibility that they were husband and wife, but can not confirm this.

I will have to dig some more

Well at least it's something to go on.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was in Winburg. Hell, what a place!!! It must have been awful trying to survive in a camp there sitting out on the wind blown veld.

Good luck with the further digging. I would be very keen to hear how you get on.

Thanks Adrian.

Any info helps. Even if it is only to confirm what is already known. Sometimes the more info one gets, the more questions need answering. Thats what makes this kind of research very interisting.

The more one knows, the more you want to know.

I will post my progress.

Regards

Henry
