Hello All,

I recently come across a QSA named to a member (Pte) of the Kimberley Volunteer Regt. The service number is 5 digits which seems to be inconsistent with the regimental numbering. I don't believe numbers were issued with more then 4 digits? The medal roll shows the soldier with a 3 digit service number. The roll also has a note that states: Kimberley Town Guard. The soldier is on the Town Guard roll but his name is crossed off with a note Kimberley Vol Regt and that 4 bars were claimed in 1901. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Tom

Hello Tom

Five digit number for colonial units and British Army corps are fine.

Many men in colonial units have two numbers (one being five digit) for the same unit. Maybe a re-numbering exercise took place - probably ordered by Army HQ as it seems to effect a lot of colonial units.

Why? I don't know, not investigated deeply.

The facts you present are normal.

Thanks. I have to kick myself. The Kimberley Vol Regt medal roll did show his service not only with the Kimberley Town Guard but also with the Kimberley Light Horse. I missed the KLH notation. It appears he earned the Defense of Kimberley with the KVR and the 3 bars OFS TV and CC with the KLH.
