Hi - just a further bit of info - On my grandfather's discharge form from Mounties regarding his service in South Africa - Sam Steel has written - Con. G Mitchell 3358 ...... Presumably the 3358 refers to his number with the Strathconas?

Good Morning Golfy......

Couple of things.....

George Mitchell, Strathcona's Horse, Regimental Number 439

Enlisted: Lethbridge Alberta

Born: Chard, Somerset, England

NOK: Mother

N.W.M.P. Regimental Number 3358

Sorry you had them reversed......

I am sure that you know there is 9 Pages of Strathcona Records on line and 42 Pages of NWMP Records.....

You are correct about the bars on his medal except he would have been sent the South Africa 1901 later from the Strathconas.

Mike

P.S. On discharge from the Strathconas he was a Sergeant

I have recently read a book written by Col. Sam Steele (its now out of print but my local library searched down a copy for me) of the life and times of the Mounted Police and there is a section about their time in the Boer War, which makes interesting reading.

Once again, many thanks for your reply.

There are several books on the Strathcona's in South Africa one is a diary published by the regiment the isbn number is 0-9699559-3-6

Thank you for your reply - I already have a copy of those records and also I have a form regarding medals entitled "A" Division S.A.Constabulary listing all applicants for medals, my grandfather's entry is listed as Regimental no 182 Sgt G Mitchell (lists the medal entitled to) and in the remarks column "discharged 23 4/01".

I wonder if you could tell me what the Reg. no 182 refers to? Do you think the no. 182 refers to the Imperial Military Railway? As you point out, I incorrectly transposed his reg. no in my previous message.

Anu info gratefully received.
