These turned up yesterday. I'm thinking Thornycroft's Mounted Infantry although I have seen a somewhat less chunky brass version . I have seen various titles made in this rather rough cast format, namely NMR and ILH and these were both Boer War. Thornycrofts was only opearating during the Boer War , so I think that this is what it is.

Thorneycroft's was, from memory, raised on the 20th of October 1899 and disbanded on the 30th of June 1902, so it would have to be Anglo Boer War, but, that example is earlier rather than later, in common with the early practice in the SAMIF, shoulder titles were not normally worn by the rank and file.
Thorneycroft's men wore them on their small "torin" or Austrian caps.

I wonder how many units had those chunky titles, I find that I have NMR. ILH. Steinaeckers Horse ( SH) , Imperial Bearer Corps ( IBC)
