No, his job was to destroy the enemy in the Spelonken using all means possible.

But Morant was executed for doing just that and Taylor actually ran the operation in the Spelonken

LOL, yes indeed, but, you should bare in mind he was Irish, not Australian and he also had connections in high places, moreover, I should imagine he knew too much.
There was a great deal of pressure to end the war, simply because,
it was no longer a war that Britain could afford, way to expensive to continue to fight, but, as soon as the goal posts were moved, again, a new post war situation was envisaged, with the direct result that he was stabbed in the back.
Never mind Iain, we can't alter history, no matter how unfair it might be!
