Arantxa, I agree the photo was taken in SA during the ABW - the uniform and two sisal plants in pots are very familiar.
They seem to be a group of mounted infantry [dots indicate riding crops] and two men have cavalry-style helmets [starred]). The insignia seems to be a blackened badge on the flap of the slouch hat [arrowed]. I think the tassel you highlight is unofficial. Rob
