Greetings Chaps,

As promised here is the South African Light Horse badge I have just added to my modest collection.

Any thoughts or comments most welcome. I don't know a great deal about this particular badge, so any addition information would be helpful.

Cheerio,

Roy

Roy

That is a most unusual badge that I have not seen before. Very nice!

According to Major Tylden's book, 'The Armed Forces of South Africa', the motto of the SALH was 'Usiba enjaloh ngapambele' . It is Zulu for 'Feathers at the front', a reference to the plumes in their slouch hats that you asked about two days ago. These plumes were distinctive of the SALH, and are from the male Long-tailed Widowbird, which occurs in the grasslands of eastern South Africa. This led to the men being referred to as "the Cocky-Ollie Birds".

Regards
Brett

Hi Gents,

Some really wonderful information - thank you! I can see I have some enjoyable reading ahead.

It seems there are many really wonderful variations of this badge to look out for.

Roy, your badge was actually worn by members, of the Natal Squadron, of the original regiment during the Anglo Boer War.
