I think the question is "Did 'Alfred's Own Company' exist in any official capacity?"

iI it did then, even, though they appropriated another unit's badge, that is the badge worn by "Alfred's Own Company".

If not then it is just plain humorous.

Hello Rory,
I really don't think it is heart breaking in anyway at all, ask to see the reverse, just from the photograph, I would have to say that it is a British made post 1896 Army Ordnance Corps shoulder title, prior to then, from memory, they had worn OSC, their title in those days had been the Ordnance Store Corps.
If, however, this particular PAG company, actually did wear these titles, your two friends need do nothing, other than perhaps add a note "also worn by the British Army" and so forth
Regards Frank

Thanks for the input.

Regards

Rory

The regimental history, "Prince Alfred's Guard 1856-1966 'by Neil Orpen makes no mention of Alfreds Own Company. This is not to say that it didn't exist , but I doubt it.

You would certainly expect such a Company within the regiment ,to have the prefix "Prince" or at least, I would, that phase, would be, in my opinion, unusual, by the standards of the day, even in the Cape Volunteers.
