Hi all

I hope you can help, I have this photo of either my grandfather or great grandfather in a war. I don't know which war.

I would like to know, in this photos would the soldiers be British or Boer,
What war it could be, what year do you estimate this photo was taken.

Any assistance and opinions welcome.

Thank in advance.

Naomi,

It is certainly British and depicts the Royal Field Artillery or Royal Horse Artillery. Given the headwear, I would say this was later than Boer War.

If you have the names of your gf of ggf we can check for service in the Boer War.

Thanks.

My grandfather was Jacobus Johannes van Jaarsveldt. As far as my great grandfather is concerned i wish i knew his names.
He is the man on the horse, or so my dad told us all the years.

Hope you can assist. I would at least be a step closer to finding out more.

Naomi,

There were no Anglo Boer War medals issued on the Boer side to anyone with the surname Van Jaarsveldt but there were some to Van Jaarsveld. The closest match is Johannes of the Kroonstad Commando.

It is worth looking at this page to see if he is listed: angloboerwar.com/other-information/89-pr...oer-prisoners-of-war

There were a couple of Van Jaarsveldts who fought on the British side. Their initials are AJ, BJ and JV.

The photograph appears to show an RHA gun team, I would think before 1914, although certainly well after the Anglo Boer War, I have to say they do not look as though they are in "a war" but, which man is your grandfather?
