Interested Forum members
Judging by the scattered chargers of 7mm Mauser ammunition in front of the gentleman in the boater (as well in his left hand), this workshop special was in calibre 7mm. As the Maxim mechanism could not take charger loading, it must have been belt fed. It would be interesting to know more about this expedient.

Carriage-mounted .303-inch Vickers Sons & Maxim machine gun, shortly after landing at Durban with the 2nd Bn. Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment.

Also a photograph of a Maxim carriage plate, similar to the one clearly visible below the right hand seat in the R.W.S.R. image.

An attributed ABW Broomhandle C96 is being sold in the US at Cowan's Auctions, Cincinnati, on 3 May 2023. Estimate: $6,000 to $9,000.

Engraved: "CAPT. DANIEL / 3rd ROYAL LANCASTER"

Captain Charles James Daniel, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment
S. African War, 1899-1902 - Served as Adjutant, 3rd Battalion, King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment (from 23 January 1900). Operations in Orange River Colony (May to 29 November 1900). Operations in Cape Colony, south of Orange River, March to May 1900. Operations in Orange River Colony, 30 November 1900 to September 1901. Operations in Cape Colony, September 1901 to January 1902. Despatches, London Gazette, 10 September, DSO, Medal with two clasps, King’s Medal with two clasps. The insignia were presented by the King, 12 March 1902, and the Warrant sent 19 March, 1902.

As Captain Daniel, N. Lancs Regt., was attached to the 3rd Bn. Royal Lancaster Regiment from 23 January 1900, the “Royal Lancaster” inscription shows that this piece was purchased for service in South Africa.
