These metal shoulder titles appear to have been worn towards the end of the ABW. Can anybody confirm this please?

A similar one to the last one has been posted as a sweetheart badge with some engraving on it on another thread.

I was very interested to see the 2MI title, which is new to me. Presumably, it was worn by the 2nd Mounted Infantry Brigade and/or the 2nd Battalion Mounted Infantry of that Brigade.

I wonder if I am correct in believing that the 1st and 2nd MI Brigades were raised specifically for service in the Boer War, so 1MI and 2MI titles would have been worn only in South Africa at that time?

Thanks for the comments.

I also have a 6MI title exactly the same size as the 2MI. I have never discovered the exact info on them except to say that they were likely to have been worn at around 1900 / 1901 by the MI in SA. Would love some more info or even better photographic evidence of them being worn.

Regards

You are fortunate indeed to have two MI titles. I wonder if there are other forum members who share this distinction?

I think it was the Imperial mounted infantry and Colonial lighthorsemen who won the guerilla phase of the Boer War for the British. The mounted infantry were usually identified with their regiment of origin, although with the later establishment of MI battalions and brigades this linkage was less obvious. It seems that after the war ended, so did the identity of the MI and only the names of the cavalry and foot regiments survived.

Hi Dudley,

Another great collection of titles, thank you for sharing.
Been meaning to ask you for a while now, do you use a light box for your images or are you using photoshop to replace the backgrounds.
Either way they are superb images.
