From the next Spink auction.

QSA (4) Belmont, Transvaal, Wittebergen, South Africa 1901 (4505 Pte. J. McCourt, Munster Fus:), unofficial rivets between state and date clasps;
[ KSA (2) ]

James McCourt was advanced Lance Corporal and died at Rawalpindi on 9 July 1905.

His KSA (2) is listed on WO100/347p106.

Edward Hassett was born in Mallow, Cork, enlisted 23/5/91 aged 19, various courts martial and imprisonments for absence, insubordinate language and drunkenness, served South Africa 5/2/00 to 4/9/02, discharged 22/5/03.

Noonan's say the Modder River clasp scarce to the Royal Munster Fusiliers. Cresswell’s Irish Medals states only one half company present, comprising 2 officers and 69 other ranks; British Battles and Medals gives a total of 75 clasps to the regiment.

CB Military breast badge, a good quality tailor’s copy, the suspension bar stamped ‘S.G.’, lacking integral riband buckle;
QSA (1) Belmont (Colonel. E. S. Evans, C.B., Muns: Fus:) engraved naming

CB London Gazette 19 April 1901: ‘In recognition of services during the operations in South Africa.’

Edward Stokes Evans was commissioned Lieutenant in the 101st Regiment of Foot on 13 June 1874, and was promoted Captain on 1 July 1881; Major on 1 April 1892; and Lieutenant-Colonel on 4 November 1896. He served with the Royal Munster Fusiliers in South Africa during the Boer War (CB, MID, Medal with clasp), and was promoted Colonel on 4 November 1900. He transferred to the half pay list on 11 March 1901.

Unusual to see a Lt Col down near the base of the list (WO100/208p2).

QSA (3) Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen (3338 Pte. J. Lagan. Munster Fus:) good very fine £180-£220

Noonan's say J Lagan served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers in South Africa during the Boer War, and died of enteric fever at Kimberley on 1 January 1902.

There is an entry for him on the KSA roll, WO100/347p33. A note says 'To Army Reserve".

HIs QSA (3) is listed in W0100/208p41.

Both In Memorial and the SAFF Casualty roll say he died on 1st January.
