Hi all

This question is probably aimed more at Brett Hendey than anyone else.

I today acquired a RoL clasp QSA to Tpr.D.M. Gray of the Natal Carbineers.

Gray was killed in action at Colenso on 15 December 1899.

I would like to know what action was on the go in which he would have lost his life.

Additionally, how many K.I.A.'s were there for the Carbineers in the ABW?

Regards

Rory

Rory, I just had a look at the transcription of the casualty return for D.M.Gray. His rank is given as 'Trumpeter' on that but on the roll he's given as 'Trooper'.

Cheers,

Mark

Thanks Mark

I am not familiar with the casualty return. Is it in published format?

Please advise how I would go about getting a copy of this.

Rory, looking at the other NC casualties for the 15 December 1899 I see there seem to be a lot of trumpeters. Unless the band was ambushed, I think a clerk somewhere thought Tpr meant 'Trumpeter' not 'Trooper'.

Trumpeter P Adie, Killed, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Trumpeter J Agnew, Wounded, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Trumpeter D M Gray, Killed, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Trumpeter H N Jenner, Killed, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Trumpeter E King, Wounded, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Lieutenant D W McKay, Wounded, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Trumpeter P E Smith, Wounded, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Sergeant P J Stevens, Wounded, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Trumpeter B W Warren, Killed, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,
Lieutenant R W Wilson, Wounded, Colenso, 15 Dec 1899,

Cheers,

Mark

The thought of ambushing the band made me laugh yesterday!
