I had a search of the site to see if a medal named to this unit had been illustrated; could not find one so here goes .....

The unit gets a good write-up in Stirling and he comments that the unit was part of the Ookiep garrison when that town was besieged in 4/02. The K.L.Kieran volume ("The Defence and Relief of O'okiep" ISBN 976-8136-31-6) shows "141 Cpl. John Burgess of 2nd Namaqualand Border Scouts" as entitled to the illustrated clasps and that he served from 14011902 to 23041902.
IL supposes that no one will ever know if Cpl. John Burgess was awarded the Cape Copper Company medal; unless, of course, it turns up somewhere :woohoo:
Regards to all
IL.

Hello IL,

I remeber this QSA as I was interested in it when it was on auction.

I spoke to Mike Rowan who is a member here and who also has the roll for the Cape Copper Company medal. Burgess is not listed on the roll according to Mike when he looked for me.

Well, that means I don't have to worry too much about the CCCM turning up! Thanks for that. I suppose that there were some NBS chaps who were NOT in the siege. Not worried about that aspect, however - the unit is uncommon enough. Brian Kieran says that "unfortunately there is no trace of any kind of medal roll (for the CCCM)". His book, however, dates back to 1995 and the roll has clearly come to light.
Regards
IL.

There is often mention of a roll by Forsyth. However I remember this is just based on a list of units present and is NOT an actual roll of the Copper medal. Only the Company had that and it has never been found.

Please someone shed more light on this.

This is it, from 1986. Despite the title Forsyth did not find a roll to base this on. It is a list of the TG etc. and he has assumed they got the Copper medal.

So this won't cover a lot of civilians.
