Queens South Africa Medal Kings Royal Rifle Corps, medal with three clasps, Defence of Ladysmith, Transvaal and Laings Nek, medal awarded to “9263 PTE W J BRITTON K.R.R.C”. Remains of ghost dates to the reverse. William John Britton was born in Croydon, Surrey. He attested for the Kings Royal Rifle Corps on 30th December 1895. He served with the regiment in South Africa during the Boer War, also in India and Ceylon before being discharged on 29th December 1911. He is shown on the medal roll as being entitled to all three clasps for the Queens South Africa medal. Appears to be his sole entitlement.

QSA (4) Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, Transvaal, Laing’s Nek (1263 Cpl. W. Butler, K.R.R.C.)

William Butler was born in Bridgenorth, Shropshire. A weaver by occupation and a member of the 3rd East Lancashire Regiment (Militia), he attested for the King’s Royal Rifle Corps at Burnley, Lancashire on 1 November 1898, aged 18 years, 11 months. With the 4th Battalion he served in South Africa, January-July 1900; Ceylon, July 1900-January 1901, and India, January 1901-November 1906. He was discharged on 31 October 1910 on the termination of his first period of engagement.

The MC Group to Sgt Major Powell which sold at DNW a year ago for a hammer price of £1,400 is now available at Wellington Auctions for £2,350.

KSA with ring suspender (7080 Pte. R. Gaydon. K.R.R.C.)

Robert Gaydon was born at Millwall in 1874 and listed his father, at the Goldsmiths Building on Drury Lane as his next of kin upon his joining the King's Royal Rifle Corps in 1892.

Gaydon was slightly wounded on 8 September 1900 near Lydenburg, suffering a splinter wound to his nose.

Returned to England, time expires in 7 August 1902.

QSA (3) Defence of Ladysmith, Orange Free State, South Africa 1902 (130 Pte. T. Curtis, K.R.R.C.), unofficial rivets between first and second clasps;

Tom Curtis was born on 3 June 1878 at Vernham, Hampshire and joined the King's Royal Rifle Corps in April 1897. Having seen active service during the Boer War with the 2nd and 4th Battalions, he was discharged in 1907, taking work as a Postman in Horsham, Sussex.

Curtis re-enlisted upon the outbreak of the Great War and joined the Royal Sussex Regiment on 11 November 1914, being discharged sick on 14 January 1916 (entitled Silver War Badge). He joined the Royal Naval Air Service on 19 June 1917, latterly joining the Royal Air Force. Finally discharged in 1920, Curtis returned to his work with the Royal Mail. Awarded the Imperial Service Medal in February 1935, he died in Horsham in 1939.
