Fred Eley (1874-1948) joined the Telegraph Battn of the Royal Engineers in 1901.

Mowbray's state that teh Telegraph Battalion laid 18,000 miles of wire and successfully introduced the Wheatstone Automatic Telegraph which sent messages faster.
