I have the release dates of the vast majority of British POWs captured before August 1900 - these are on my website The Register and FindmyPast .

For nearly a year most British POWs were sent to Pretoria to be held, when Pretoria was captured the prisoners were moved eastwards and recaptured/released/escaped at different times. Barrett's release was one of the last.

This another topic I need to write in full, but I will probably do a summary on my blog .

I wonder why the Boers held onto him so long-an unassuming private. Did he meet up with any of his former captives(guards) when he was on St Helena?

Thanks for that I found my man on two lists-with 'C' Company of the Glosters on the Nooitgedacht list and being released on the Sep 5 list. I had no idea how many men of some regiments were captured, they must have almost ceased to exist as units.

The other interesting point for me was that for several years I had an intense interest in South Australians at the Boer War-on one list I noticed the names of 10 Bushmen who had been captured-I have never sighted this info anywhere until now-well done.

While I was scanning all this info I came across a 4056 L.Barrett same regt-he has a consecutive number to my man and same surname-the chances are this has to be a brother who enlisted at the same time and also finished up a POW.
