QSA (4) RELIEF OF KIMBERLEY, PAARDERBERG, DRIEFONTEIN, TRANSVAAL (2247 TPR. W.I. MORGAN. ROBERTS HORSE.)

Described as:

Comes with copies medal rolls, newspaper articles, census and extract from the Llansteffan War Memorial. Lance Corporal William Ivor Morgan was born in Llansteffan, Wales in 1881. His father was the master of the local school for 15 years. Following the death of his father, William sailed for South Africa in April 1896 (at the time he was 15) and was working on a farm near Capetown. He moved on to work for the railways as a telegraph operator on the Capetown to Kimberley line. On 10/1/1900 he enlisted into E Squadron, Robert’s Horse (service # 2247) for a 1-year engagement, serving with them until 3/1/1901. He promptly enlisted into the Midland Mounted Rifles the same day 3/1/1901 (service number 32) and served with the unit until killed in action on the 20/6/1901 at Waterkloof. The M.M.R losses on the day were 8 killed and 11 wounded (of whom another 3 died). At the time the unit was following up the Boer forces under General Malan who had been repulsed in the attack at Richmond. As per the newspaper article, Morgan was with General Frenches column in the advance on Kimberley, fought at Sannas Post, was present for the surrender of Cronje at the battle of Paardeberg. He injured his leg and on recovery worked for 3 months with the Royal Engineers as a telegraphist, until he re-joined his unit, only to fall in battle.

With reference to 2247 Trooper W. I. Morgan, he is indeed mentioned on the webpage for the Llansteffan War Memorial. However, there is no memorial within the church or village for him nor his brother (an officer who was killed when hit and killed by a train while serving during the Great War), despite both men being born in Llansteffan.

The family moved to Huddersfield, Yorkshire prior to William emigrating to South Africa after the death of his father.
William is not named on the Huddersfield Boer War Memorial either!

However, his name and the unit in which he was killed can be found on the Carmarthenshire Boer War Memorial in Carmarthen, so it's not all bad news.

QSA (5) Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Transvaal, South Africa 1901 (Lieut: J. F. Hawkins, Roberts Horse.) officially engraved naming

James Frederick Hawkins joined the South African Light Horse as Lieutenant on 20 November 1899, and transferred to Roberts Horse on 24 February 1900, serving as Lieutenant and Quartermaster. He was taken prisoner of war at Sannah’s Post on 31 March 1900. It was largely due to the rear-guard action of Roberts Horse on this day that any of the guns of the Royal Horse Artillery were saved. Five Victoria Crosses were awarded for this action: four to Q Battery RHA, and one to Lieutenant Maxwell who was attached to Roberts Horse and served beside Lieutenant Hawkins, who is listed alongside Captain P. D. Dray as being wounded and subsequently taken prisoner of war. Lieutenant Home was also captured but not wounded, and of the same regiment, Captains Carrington and Smith were severely wounded but not captured. Hawkins was released early in June 1900, being announced in the list of returned officers alongside Veterinary Captain Bray and Lieutenant Horne of the same regiment. After his release he joined the Military Government, on the Staff at Pretoria on 14 June 1900.
