How scarce are these? In all my years 'll collecting I have never seen one.

WO 100/243 Pages 232 and 239 has him down as entitled to the CC and SA 01 clasps.

One of three Brothers it would seem.

The medal arrived today - here are a couple of photos. The patina is really impressive as is the original ribbon still in jolly good condition.

Quite a scarce medal really, for official purpose, they had been raised by Lord Methune himself, on the 5th of January 1901, in Vryburg, so rather well after Dennison's Scouts, I think it had been originally intended to be two squadrons and just like the Vryburg Scouts, which was to be created there before Vereeniging, it would be incorporated into the Western Light Horse.
Interestingly, Cullinan's Horse would ride again just some twelve years later, down the line and take on both new and old foes alike.

I have been trying to determine the number of medals actually issued to Cullinan's Horse and this is proving to be a difficult task.

The medal roll is in WO100/243 pages 224 to 243. Pages from 234 form the supplementary roll.

A note on the first page says:



I believe this does not refer to the supplementary roll containing date clasps because date clasps are known the medals in Cullinan's Horse. Instead, I think this refers to the additional QSA roll in pages 224 to 231.

A record for the number of men listed on a single page must surely go to page 232 which lists 57 names.



Discounting men whose medal was issued elsewhere and including those from the 'C' list of applicants, I estimate the number of medal actually named to Cullinan's Horse is 30.

Known medals:

16 Trooper Leamy QSA (1) CC and entitled to SA01.
Trooper Featherstonehaugh QSA (2) CC SA01.
Cpl A W Harris. QSA (3) CC SA01 SA02.
Tpr W Davis. QSA (1) CC. Entitled to S01 and SA02.




From the attestation papers Captain Cullinan was appointed on 8 January 1901 which the same date as the first enrollments eg No 3 Corporal Bradfield. Captain Cullinan resigned 1 June 1902, the last date on which anyone left the unit. Incidentally, Bradfield has the number 3 in the nominal roll and 4 on the medal roll, anomalies that Mike identified in his post on Featherstonehaugh.

As Frank noted, Cullinan’s Horse was re-raised in the Great was in Bechuanaland under Major A W Cullinan (who was granted the DSO for his services) with a strength of 3 Squadrons. They served in German SWA with the Southern Army, Eastern Force. DNW and City Coins have sold trios named so.
