I acquired a QSA with clasps DoL and SA 1901 to 5303 Pte. P. Joyce of the 1st Battalion, Liverpool Regiment today and, whereas I have tracked him down on the rolls for the Defence of Ladysmith clasp, I can't seem to find a roll iro the SA 1901 clasp - so any help would be appreciated!

He was invalided back to England in August 1900 which might have made him ineligible for the latter clasp?

I attach a few pics of the medal and naming

Regards

Rory

Well done Eric. Sadly what you say is indeed the case with one chap "monopolising" the auction. Still that is what free trade is all about and I like to think I, and possibly a few others, gave him a run for his money on quite a number of the items. :)

I was struck by the number of medals which were either late issue (there was one issued in 1925) as well as a few which were missing their KSA;s to complete the group. These matters don't necessarily detract from the overall enjoyment of the medals but do become a factor when it is time to move them on.

I was particularly taken (but not to the point I wanted to bid) with the QSA to Smyth who also served in WWI under the alias of J Kelly. Were it not for his missing WWI medals I might have been tempted.

The biggest "sleeper" of the day I felt was the DoL/ RoM to McGreary of the ILH - I forget the stats now but the combination of clasps is rare. I have a chap who qualified for both (H L Wood) but his medal was issued off the East Griqualand MR roll as a Lieutenant.

Rory,

Had a look at the 1st Liverpool Regt rolls. He is not listed on the Supplementary rolls as having the SA 01 clasp that I can see !!

I really also wanted the following, but the price was simply unjustifiably expensive...

654 CPL. OH Jenkins Brabants Horse (KSA - FID) --- MY NOTES (Wounded In Action - Cradock 2 May 1901) Love the transfer to FID also.
Station Captain W. L. Gray FID
2100 Corpl. H.L. Mason Roberts Horse --- MY NOTES (Wounded slighly Waterkloof Zeerust could be another guy in unit)
