The book "Recipients of the DCM" shows "9715 Pte. Darling, W.H." of ASC (Army Service Corps) as receiving the DCM for Omdurman 2/9/98. Omdurman was the final battle of the campaigns in the Sudan.

Oh my gosh! Little lump in my throat knowing it's actually written somewhere out there!! Thank you so much.
Don't spose anyone has any suggestions on where to look for the reason he got it...does such a thing even exist? Thank you.

There were nine DCMs awarded to the ASC for the 1898 Sudan campaign. All shown in the "Recipients of the DCM" book as being awarded for Omdurman. Have you sought out his papers from the UN National Archives? That might give you some ideas. Or perhaps the commercial sites may be of use? The actual battle of Omdurman was a very large affair; I am sure that a basic on-line search would give you the background to the battle. That aspect is somewhat outside the scope of this site. Did your GGF serve during the South African campaign?
Good luck with your research

Thank you again! I will try the UN National archives...thank you.
He served in the battle of Omderman and Khartoum. You have no idea how great it is to get an idea of where to look. The internet is a large place and not being terribly grand at research seem to just be chasing my tail.

The UK National Archive's, not the UN ones. There is no UN one. You want the United Kingdom archives at Kew in London. If you Google them you will be able to search their site, but may need to find a researcher to go and find his papers. I suggest trying Ancestry or Find My Past first. Good luck, Ryan

Yes, United Kingdom National Archives. I hit the wrong key; sorry about that.
