TOPIC:

Group to C.S.M. George Grant who served with Scottish Horse during the Boer War then rejoined at the begining WW1 and went on to be decorated with the Distisngushed Conduct Medal for Gallantry at Beaumont Hamel Somme during an attack on the German Lines on the 13th November 1916 his Citation reads

2605 L./.Sjt. G. Grant, Sea. Highrs.
"For conspicuous gallantry in action. He rallied men of other units and led them forward.
Later, with two men, he captured fifty prisoners. On another occasion he rescued many wounded men under very heavy fire."

the War Diary in Dec 1916 records 3 Military Cross's 2 DCM's & 8 Military Medals awarded for that action on the 13/11/1916

Unfortunatly his WW1 service papers do not seem to have survived but I have located his Imperial Yemanry Scottish Horse papers for the Boer War.

A very nice late Somme award, I take it this is #37203 Scottish Horse?

I think that the Somme was really appalling, that it was allowed to continue for as long as it actually did, was nothing short of an absolute tragedy, that is a magnificent group of medals.
