Good Evening Everyone.....

I have just rec'd a jiffy bag containing a single bar CAPE COLONY medal named to:

982 PTE. T. NICHOLSON. 1-C. (GRAHAMSTOWN) . VOLS.

I have exhausted the sources that I have in researching this medal and was wondering if there is any information out in cyber space.....
One of the interesting things is that the medal is named with the Small World War One style naming so therefore I am guessing it is a late or post WW1 issue......
It also seems to be part of a broken group as written on the label with it states W.W.1. Pair - S.A.O.C. and W.W.1. Pair A.O.C. and also Nicholson Mercantile Marine......

Thanks in advance.....

Looking at WO100/248 page 156, the medal and clasp certainly do appear to be a late issue, so I would not be concerned about the naming.

The First City Volunteers was one of the pre-existing Cape units, having been established in 1875.

From the next Kaplan Auction.

CGHGSM (1) Bechuanaland (Corpl J P Whiteside, 1st City Volunteers).

Possibly the J P Whiteside who served as a civilian clerk attached to the ASC during the Boer War.
