Sure - the volunteer RE units supplied detachments to serve with regular companies. No more than 50-115 served from each unit, the Royal Mons had 257 who served.

Apart from their small numbers issued, the joy of these units is that they are named to "R.E." - just like the regulars. From memory the only volunteer units not named RE are the Royal Monmouth Militia (but not all, I have a medal with the unit as RL: ENGINEERS.), Anglesey Militia and Electrical Engineers.

Something I also have an interest in.
A couple of points. I wish that Militia were not referred to as Volunteers. They may have volunteered, but they are not Volunteers. Volunteers are members of the Volunteer Force.
Royal Engineer Volunteer Special Service section consisted of 1 officer and only 25 men. A second section went out on return of the first.

Here is a variation on naming for Meurig's data base.

Thanks Pete, very helpful. I can see some RE vol units are going to be hard to buy as sleepers with "VOLS" on the naming. :(

Last night, I added number 10 to my collection - Durham Volunteers. :)

I had a bid on it, but not too heavy. It needs the 2 date clasps.
W S Martin 8388 - just 29 after 8359 Darroch of Lanarkshire R E V
Each a member of their respective 2nd service unit

My interest is medals to Volunteers, so not specifically Engineers.
I have 7 or so RE Vol units represented, but I'm not after 1 of each. In addition I seem to have gathered in a few to the Railway Reservists of the Cheshire RE Vols, and 3 groups to the Telegraph Reserve. It's an interesting diversion.
I'm at the age now when I should be reducing my collection rather than adding to it, so any addition has to pass the test of "What can I get for it tomorrow.?", unless of course it is a must have for a reunite (of which I need many).
I grudge like hell the prospect that some auction house will get c.40% of the value of my collection if that is how it is disseminated.

The medal roll of the Corps of Engineers produced by the Institution of RE has this annotation against 8388 Martin
2nd Service Section. QSA & State clasps issued 03.04.02. Clasps SA01; SA02 issued 16.12.04. QSA replaced
