Spink have included the pair to Lt A L Hope in their next auction.

They have added the line that the QSA is a

Uniquely named Medal to a Lieutenant of the British South Africa Police for the Defence of Mafeking.

This is not correct. There is also a QSA for the siege named to Lt A H Martin, BSAP.

The roll is annotated for Lt Martin which partially obscures the tick for the DoM clasp so it is easy to make this mistake.

A curious pair from the next Noble Numismatics auction.

Described as:

Queen's South Africa Medal 1899, (type 3 reverse), - two clasps - South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902; King's South Africa Medal 1902, - clasp - Rhodesia. 1389 Tpr. G.Johnson. B.S.A.Police on both medals. First medal impressed, second medal engraved and renamed. Mounted in a glass-topped black timber hexagonal display case with a range of other items as listed below, the clasps on the medals are reversed, otherwise good very fine.
Together with British South Africa Police badges (4, two different types); British South Africa Police title removed from badge; BSAP titles (2 plus single letters for B S A P); officer's pip; piece of alluvial gold with quartz attached as found; four teeth (2 small, 2 large) from unknown scource.

Presumably this is

QSA (1) Rhodesia
KSA (2)

Which medal is renamed is unclear, presumably the KSA?

The QSA roll for the BSAP, WO100/238p36, does not list any clasps for him. Medal issued 1 September 1905
