I obtained a QSA with the name erased, partial service number of 35(?)3 survived and 2nd Dragoon in perfect condition. The only name with that number sequence is 3543 F. Melling. any thoughts?

Fred Melling, a clerk from Bury, had originally joined the Greys in 1891, having been discharged he was subsequently recalled and served in South Africa from the 5th of October 1899 until the 20th of April 1901.before being discharged upon the 9th of October that same year, his conduct and character whilst serving with the Colours was found to be Indifferent, notwithstanding, he was unfit for further service and I would think his time in captivity would certainly have not been advantageous in any way whatsoever.

You can pay for the research services of sites like casus belli or you can search this site for free. There is a full roll for the Scots Greys on the link Mike provided. You can also search for partial regimental numbers eg 35??.

I assume Imperial must have read your roll in the link Mike gave in his post, I did not check, but, with further assumptions on my part, firstly, that the three extant numerals on the medal are, indeed, as stated and secondly, that there is only, as a result, a single likely recipient, also, as stated, I would suggest the medal concerned is worth having, although, the condition does make it a disappointment.
