That's useful - I've been trying to piece together the appearance of the set of medals that Marine Gunnery Serjeant Tommy Spence would have had: He served in - among other ships - HMS Doris & HMS Naiid, was awarded the QSA with Cape Colony clasp, KSA and AGC with Somaliland clasp. Retired with LSGC medal in 1912, only to be renlisted in HMS Kent and was one of the 10(?) unforunates to lose thier lives in the Battle of the Falklands. He's buried in Port Stanley cemetry and although he came from our small Yorkshire village, nobody knew anything about him until I researched the story - so a forgotten hoero remembered at last..

A nice set of clasps! George would probably have known Tommy Spence - I dont think Tommy went ashore though - at least not from his papers.

Po. 5.674 Sergt. T. Spence appears on the QSA roll for HMS Doris as qualifying for a no clasp QSA which means he didn't serve ashore. He appears on the AGS roll for HMS Naiad as qualifying for the medal with Somaliland 1902-04 clasp. However he didn't qualify for a KSA. KSAs to men of the Naval Brigade are rare as only 33 were awarded. Most of those were awarded to Transport Staff or Royal Marines serving with the army. Three were awarded to men from HMS Doris (he wasn't one of them) and one to HMS Magicienne.
