Footnote
Anthony Leyden attested for the Middlesex Regiment and served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War. He was wounded at Spion Kop on 24 January 1900, on which date the battalion suffered 4 Officers and 38 men killed, and 4 Officers and 49 men wounded. He further attested into the Royal Defence Corps on 26 July 1915 for service during the Great War and was discharged on 5 March 1917 with the award a Silver War Badge, No. 143,400.

CC also listed on WO100/195p46. Medal roll has surname Leydon.

British War and Bilingual Victory Medals (Sgt. W.P. Elmes. 8th S.A.H.);
War and Africa Service Medals (91289 W. Elmes)

Together with 4 related Indian Army Temperance Medals and three original photographs, one in uniform wearing his QSA, another in uniform taken during the Second Word War and another probably post-war in civilian wear.

William Paul Elmes served with the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, Middlesex Regiment during the Second Boer War, his unit being charged with guarding Boer prisoners on the island of St. Helena.

During the Great War he served in the German East Africa campaign, where he was invalided from Tanganyika, and in the Second World War he served on home duty with the South African Artillery.

1914 Star (L-5934 Pte. V. E. Ellis. 1/Middx: R.);
British War and Victory Medals (L-5934 Pte. V. E. Ellis. Midd’x R.)

Valentine Edward Ellis attested for the Middlesex Regiment under the alias T. Collins on 9 September 1899 and saw active service during the Boer War.

He saw further service during the Great War on the Western Front from 22 September 1914, was gassed and wounded in the Battle of Loos on 25 September 1915, and was discharged due to wounds on 31 July 1916, being awarded a Silver War Badge no. 58,493.
