TOPIC:

This group of medals has been off the market for 35 years and its existence may be unknown to many younger collectors. I am therefore posting it here. William Napier was one of that rare breed of men known as "Soldiers of Fortune" who travelled to the remotest parts of the Empire whenever the call was made and who often remained there and played instrumental roles in the development of their chosen communities.

Provenance: Christie’s (London), July 16, 1985 Auction, Lot 53 (not illustrated), Realized £972 including 8% (yes, 8%!) buyer’s premium.

A magnificent group it has to be said. The only thing I can add is this extract from the Muster Books of the Natal Carbineers:

"NAPIER W., On strength 26/11/1880. Struck off roll in 1887 – attended no camps since 1886. Left Colony."

I am smitten by the patina on that BSAC!

Many thanks for the additional data regarding the Natal Carbineers. Prompted by your patina comment, I have posted improved photos in order to do proper justice to the group. I always prefer to see a nice original patina on century-old medals, although that may be the numismatist inside me talking!
