QSA (2) Cape Colony, Paardeberg (3019 Pte. G. Humphreys, 2nd. Hampshire Regt.) minor official correction to latter part of surname

George Humphreys (listed as Humphries on the medal roll) was born in Audley, Kent, and attested for the Hampshire Regiment on 28 February 1890 a musician by trade. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War, and is shown on a subsidiary medal roll as also being entitled to the Transvaal and South Africa 1902 clasps, being listed as ‘Deceased’. He died in a railway accident near Barberton, South Africa, on 30 March 1902.

M&E say Private A. Page of the 2nd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, is confirmed on the medal roll. He also served with the 7th Battalion Mounted Infantry.

BSACM reverse Rhodesia 1896 (1) Mashonaland 1897 (4302 Pte. G. G..en. 2/Hamps. Regt.) attempt to obliterate surname, with the medal having been abrasively held in a vice causing damage to high relief parts on both sides;

Described as:

Accompanied by original document including, Certified copy birth certificate of Frederick William Clark, born King’s Lynn 20th October 1875. Document dated 3rd May 1917 3 studio portrait photographs, as a child, in uniform and later in life. Group photograph in uniform, Boer War period. Character Certificate, for 3740 Pte F.W. Clarke (sic) Hampshire Regiment, dated 3rd October 1898 Discharge certificate 8th October 1903 Army Reserve Discharge Certificate, dated 8th November 1907. Handwritten (in pencil) Active Service Diary of 3740 Pte F W Clark, D Company, 2nd Hampshire Regiment covering the period December 1899 to December 1900. This with daily entries giving a detailed view of Regimental life and rare. Both medals and all clasps confirmed on the medal roll of 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment. 18-year-old Federick William Clark from King’s Lynn, Norfolk attested for the 8th Hussars on 9th October 1891 and transferred to the 2nd Battalion Hampshire Regiment on 25th January 1892. He served in the UK until his transfer to the Army Reserve on 9th October 1898. Recalled for service on 18th December 1899 he served in South Africa from 4th January 1900 until 5th September 1902 when he returned to the UK and was demobilised. He retransferred to the Army Reserve on 25th April 1903 and was discharged on 8th October 1903. A month later he enlisted for Section D Army Reserve being discharged on 8th November 1907.

QSA (4) Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg, Driefontein, Johannesburg (4657 PTE. W VINCE 2ND HAMPSHIRE REGT.)

Walter Vince, an 18-year-old labourer from Hinton Ampner in Hampshire attested for the Hampshire Regiment on 23rd July 1895. He served in South Africa for 1 year and 14 days and discharged as medically unfit for further service on 18th May 1901 having served for a total of 5 years and 300 days.
